Animal Cruelty Investigator Career Profile

Animal Cruelty Investigator Career ProfileAnimal Cruelty Investigator Career ProfileAnimal cruelty investigators must investigate reports of animal cruelty and enforce the laws related to such criminal acts. Duties Animal cruelty investigators are responsible for investigating accusations of animal cruelty to determine whether or not the claims are justified. Animal cruelty investigators may encounter many difficult situations such as animal abandonment, neglect, and abuse on a daily basis. Each case must be thoroughly documented so that it may be used as evidence by prosecution teams. If the claims of animal cruelty can be verified the investigator may confiscate the animal and coordinate with local law enforcement offices to make an arrest in the case. While the majority of an animal cruelty investigators work occurs in the field while pursuing leads, they also do spend some time in an office setting to complete paperwork and compile case logs. They also may do some work as huma ne educators, providing information on animal welfare to the public. Investigators must have excellent communication skills and be able to interact with animal control officers, shelter managers, volunteers, rescue groups, humane societies, veterinarians, lawyers, and law enforcement agencies. They must also be prepared to work with pet owners that may be uncooperative or openly hostile during investigations. An investigator must be sure to take adequate safety precautions while working in the field, as they will be in close contact with unfamiliar and potentially abused animals. Animals may be injured, living in very poor conditions, or even deceased. The investigator must be able to assess the situation and act quickly to remedy it if possible through proper legal channels. Due to the nature of the job, some evenings and weekend hours may be required. Career Options Animal cruelty investigators may be employed by local or state governments, humane societies, rescue organizatio ns, and other related groups. Animal cruelty investigators can readily transition into a variety of leadership positions with humane societies, rescue groups, and government agencies. The skills of an investigator are also transferable to positions such as animal health inspector or police officer. Education Training An animal cruelty investigator will ideally have a degree in either criminology or an animal science related field. Some localities require basic police officer certification. While police training is not necessary for most locations, it certainly helps a candidates chances if they have some sort of law enforcement background before applying. Experience working as a veterinary technician, humane educator, dog trainer, or animal control officer is also a big plus, as it gives the investigator a good working knowledge of animal behavior. In addition to having a strong background in animal behavior, investigators must be familiar with many different species of animals, know first aid techniques, be well versed in animal care and nutrition, can use humane capture tools and techniques, and be able to follow proper investigation procedures. Aspiring animal cruelty investigators can gain valuable practical experience by volunteering at local shelters, humane societies, and other rescue-related organizations. The National Animal Control Association (NACA) offers certification as an Animal Control/Care Officer through completion of a two-level course (40 hours per level) and passing a written certification exam. Through December 2014 more than 11,000 animal control officers had successfully completed the NACA animal control certification process. This is a valuable certification that enhances a candidates qualifications and employment potential. Salary According to data from the National Animal Control Association (NACA), animal cruelty investigators can expect to earn $50,000 to $85,000 in large metropolitan areas, $30,000 to $45,000 in mid-sized communities, and $12,000 to $24,000 in small communities. Job Outlook While the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not separate out animal cruelty investigators into their own category, it does include them in the more general grouping of animal care and service workers. The BLS survey results indicate that employment opportunities for all animal care and service workers will grow faster than the average for all professions, at a rate of approximately 11 percent, through 2024. Demand for animal cruelty investigators should continue to show growth, especially since the general public has become increasingly concerned with animal welfare and humane treatment issues. Media coverage has put a spotlight on animal cruelty in recent years, and communities have increased their response to animal abuse accordingly due to this pressure.

What Emotional Intelligence Isnt

What Emotional Intelligence Isnt What Emotional Intelligence Isnt Emotional intelligence has a nice ring to it. But, If tzu siche is any such thing as emotional intelligence (EI) or its associated emotional quotient (EQ), not only will it be very useful to know what it is, it will be important to know what it isnt. Historically speaking, a relatively new and fuzzy concept, EI has been interpreted in a multitude of ways, not all of which deserve to exist.Repeating the Mistakes of IQ HistoryIn part, as a backlash against a perceived elitist bias toward book-learnin IQ and, in part, as a back-up for those excluded by that elite, emotional intelligence and emotional quotient have become mainstream concepts and tools, however roughly framed and used. In their exuberance to fashion and wield behauptung concepts and tools, some EI proponents and commercial promoters have made mistakes that repeat those made in the early days of IQ testing and comparisons. As a result, the understanding and application of the new quotient on the block, EQ, has been flawed- plagued by some of the same errors identified and rectified since the comparably early era of IQ testing, e.g., the flaw of cultural bias and the mistake of failing to distinguish aptitude from achievement. For example, disadvantaged youths in the early 20th-century, presented with an IQ test analogy question like the following, would be virtually certain to be unable to do more than guess the answer polo is to snooker as a Royal fox hunt is to (a) regatta, (b) duck hunting, (c) the Kentucky Derby, (d) bee-keeping, (e) none of the above. Answer bDealing with Your DaughterNow consider this EI question what is the emotionally intelligent response to the following situation?Your daughter, who is 16, has been spending too much time away from the family, with a boy that you and your spouse see as totally unsuitable, especially because of his completely unacceptable religious beliefs and lifestyle choices. Should you(a) Di splay your disapproval through non-physical anger?(b) Display your disappointment through sadness?(c) Calmly discuss with her your family hopes, policies and expectations, as well as your concerns about the suitability of the boy?(d) Allow her to make her own decisions and limit your involvement to offering advice when she seeks it?(e) Take her into a courtyard and have her stoned to death for dishonoring the family by associating with an unrelated male who belongs to a different sect?If you are as egalitarian as the American ideal, you probably chose (c) or (d), while gasping at (e).The Cultural Relativity of Emotional IntelligenceExtreme though this example is, it makes the cultural relativity of emotional intelligence transparently obvious- a fact that is incorporated into some definitions of emotional intelligence, and a consideration that immediately raises a red flag regarding the eligibility of emotional intelligence to join the ranks of recognized innate and universal intell igence measures. So before you congratulate or berate yourself for a low EI online score, e.g., on the emotional intelligence test at the popular Psychology Today website (http//psychologytoday.tests.psychtests.com/take_test.php?idRegTest=1310), take a closer look at the questions in any EQ test youve taken or seen. It will be nothing short of a miracle if there are none with a cultural, moral or ideological bias or some confusion of aptitude and achievement, the latter in the form of learned emotional skills, rather than innate ones. The Psychology Today test presents hypothetical situations, comparable to the one above, in which you are asked to choose between remaining calm or silent, displaying anger, etc., in the face of a specific provocation. Notably, other-cultural options like (e), above, are excluded from any consideration whatsoever, despite the fact that in some cultures neither alleging that such behavior is a crime nor punishing it so brutally is considered wacky. Worse, in those cultures (e) is not only the epitome of emotional intelligence, it is also recognized as profound, traditional and precious emotional wisdom. (Note It has sorely tested my emotional intelligence to criticize the same Psychology Today test that gave me a 98 percentile emotional self-awareness score. Anyway, no sour grapes analysis here.)The Rank Relativity of Emotional IntelligenceDespite our cherished egalitarian ideologies, the fact is that the right response may vary depending not only on the cultural situation, but on the relative rank of the participants When outraged by an enlisted mans namby-pamby attitude, General Patton was wrong to strike the weak-willed soldier, but a toned-down, yet nonetheless stern emotional response that would have been emotionally intelligent for Patton would have been, in virtue of the difference of rank between them, stupid for the enlisted man to dare attempt.Even dominant and deferential silverback gorillas grasp this difference in their jostling for rank in the troop hierarchy. Yet, somehow, perhaps under the influence of Western egalitarianism, some EI theorists have not, and have instead blithely assumed that the correct answer on an EI test is correct for all- irrespective of both culture and rank.Emotional Aptitude vs. Emotional AchievementTo put ansicht issues into a recruitment perspective, imagine you are interviewing a Thai job applicant. You are both comfortably seated and in crossing your legs, you happen to point one of your shoes toward him. Since you are probably completely unaware of any emotional consequences, namely, his culturally-instilled discomfort in having a shod foot pointing at him, you would fail to display insight into the emotional consequences of your behavior. Does this mean you have to subtract points from your EQ? Of course not.You have merely revealed a limitation of your emotional-cultural achievement, not of any innate emotional-cultural aptitude. It means you have something to le arn, not an innate limitation to bear. But since this can be learned, why call this kind of learnable understanding intelligence? Why not call it emotional skill?Perhaps it is because skill requires extra work, whereas intelligence doesnt- which is great for really busy people, like recruiters.

Survey The common mistake that costs people a promotion

Survey The common mistake that costs people a promotionSurvey The common mistake that costs people a promotionOne of the consequences of our nearly unanimous decision to never actually pick up a telephone is the dreaded text message gaffe. Mistakingly sending U up? to your clergy, sweet dreams to your boss, or an eggplant emoji to your grandmother, whos dead thankfully. Theyre unavoidable and quite common. In a recent survey of Millennials, a significant portion of respondents said that they privileged texting over calling because sending messages granted them a written history of their interactions-fair but the benefits are fairly limited in this regard. For one thing, text messages have to be properly preserved in order to be admissible in court. Secondly and most importantly, a lot of nuance gets amputated via text, this is perhaps doubly true in a professional setting. Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfacti on, Neuroscience, and moreThe average office employee spends 2.5 hours every weekday checking their schmelzglass. Unlike more casual chat applications, though, you might hem and haw over the verbiage and tone of your email to avoid miscommunication. You want to sound casual (but not too casual), to the point (but not rude), and clear, explains the authors behind a new Typing.com study.Read-handedAccording to the new report, were all bound to inadvertently send something we didnt intend to sooner or later-my high school girlfriend and stepmom shared a name, so Ive met my quota and then some. This is just one of the pitiful errors reported by one of the 1,000+ participants surveyed for the new Typing.com study. For both emails and text messages, the majority of faux pas came in the gestalt of disparaging remarks mistakenly sent to the person that they were aimed at, with the unintentional revealing of embarrassing personal details trailing close behind. Almost 42% of respondents report ed accidentally sending professional (and critical) emails and texts to the person the messages were about, 40% hit send just after unintentionally indexing private information to a coworker, and 30% of respondents did the same but over text. Thirty-percent of that same demographic even included confidential financial details in their blunder email. For whatever reason, men were found to be more likely to send text messages meant for someone else to their casual friends, close friends, and family, while women more often unintentionally sent messages to their moms, siblings, and partners. A similar demarcation was occasioned when applied to emails. A notably larger portion of men inadvertently sent emails to clients and educators compared to women, who were found to be twice as likely to send professional emails to complete strangers.I recently discovered that Gmail has an option to un-send an email after its been sent. After you send an email from your Gmail account, youll be given a n option to recall the email you just sent. If you click it in time, youll be navigated back to the draft page. The best part is, you can actually customize the amount of time you get before the email is officially sent.Ah man, I just sent the HR guy a torrent of The Sorrow and The Pity, no worries, you have a full 30 seconds to adjust (30 seconds is the max).Three in ten respondents in the Typing.com report attempted to un-send an email that had a bunch of grammatical errors, while 20% did the same after sending a message to an unattended recipient. The remaining participants simply apologize for the impropriety, attempted to laugh it off, explained the context in full, lied, or even better-tried to pass the buck on someone else.Oops, there it isSome people embrace the room for error. One in five people actually admitted to sending a text message to someone then claiming its an accident just to strike up a conversation. Soup to nuts, the vast majority of respondents reported doing so because they had a crush on someone. Twice as many women as men said they intentionally sent an accidental text to departure a dialogue while arguing with the recipient, and three times as many men as women did so for the sake of a prank.Whatever the reason, the repercussions are occasionally severe. One in five respondents said that sending an erroneous email potentially cost them a promotion. Nineteen percent said this happened after sending an email to the incorrect recipient, 17% occasioned this outcome after sending an email to a higher up invested with grammatical mistakes. One in five respondents said their romantic relationships suffered after they sent text messages to the wrong person, and 3 in 10 said the same happened to their professional relationships. Tyoing.com, concludes,Digital communication has become so easy that we may not put a tremendous amount of thought or energy into it. Just because hitting send isnt difficult, though, doesnt mean we shouldnt be careful with our written communication, even when its a casual conversation between friends. Its easy to send something that isnt grammatically correct, has the wrong attachment, or is even directed toward the wrong person if you arent paying attention. As we found, unterstellung actions, accidental though they may be, can have unexpected negative consequences for both your relationships and career.

Expanding Role Of Nurse Practitioner And Health Staffing

Expanding Role Of Nurse Practitioner And Health StaffingExpanding Role Of Nurse Practitioner And Health StaffingExpanding Role Of Nurse Practitioner And Health Staffing Blaszczyk, Managing Editor, Resource CenterAs reported in 2011 Health Care Job Conditions Report, health care continues to be the healthiest labor-market sector, a trend driven in part by the growing demand for experienced nurse practitioners. To help explain the expanding role of the nurse practitioner in health care, we spoke with Dr. Penny Kaye Jensen, President of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and Assistant Professor(Clinical), University of Utah, College of Nursing. In this interview, Ms. Jensen discusses how nurse practitioners will shape tomorrows health care hiring needs as well as the competitive recruitment landscape for nurse practitioners.Monster Is the demand for nurse practitioners changing health care recruitmentpractices?Jensen While health care consumers are increasingly more aware of the c ontributions of NPs, employers are also becoming more familiar with advantages provided by NPs. As the market becomes more competitive for NPs, recruiters may be offering better benefit packages and salaries, as we are seeing this evolve.Monster What services do NPs provide?JensenNurse practitioners (NPs) are expert clinicians with advanced training who provide primary, acute and specialty health care services.NPs provide a full range of services such asOrdering, performing and interpreting diagnostic tests such as lab work and x-rays.Diagnosing and treating both acute and chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma.Prescribing medications and other treatments, managing patients overall care.NPs focus on the health and well-being of the whole person. What sets this group of health care providers exotisch from others is their unique emphasis on helping patients to make educated health care decisions. When considering productivity measures, employee compensation and the cost of education, NPs are cost-effective providers of health services.Monster In what areas of the country are NPs most in demand?Jensen NPs are in demand in all areas of the country, along the distribution of the population. For instance, 19-20% of the US population resides in rural areas and 18-19% of NPs practice in rural areas. However, in cities where there are more health care consumers, NPs are more heavily concentrated. Some states have more restrictive practice environments for NPs those states might be less appealing to NPs, but we do not have any evidence to indicate that they are less likely to practice in those states/communities as they simply figure out how to do their roles.Monster How competitive is the recruitment landscape for nurse practitioners? How will those trends change over time?Jensen It is competitive and we anticipate the recruitment landscape becoming increasingly so. There is a growing unmet need for high quality primary care and specialty pr oviders so that NPs are increasingly available to fill these needs. Particularly in primary care, where the NPs are the only ones increasingly available for this practice, it will be more and more competitive.Monster What sort of benefits and training should employers be prepared to offer nurse practitioners?Jensen As cited in a AANP compensation study reportnearly all (80% or more) NPs receive vacation, sick leave, liability insurance, health insurance, educational leave. However the majority of NPs also receive professional leave, disability insurance, life insurance, and retirement plan. So the benefits should be robust if a recruitment package is going to be competitive.Monster How are nurse practitioners likely to help address an ongoing health care employment trend the lack of primary care physicians?Jensen Nurse practitioners (NPs) are the fastest growing health care profession in primary care, growing at close to a 10% rate in primary care physicians are growing at less than 2% in primary care. Nurse practitioners are the best solution to fill the great need for access to primary care.As well, we see that twice the percentage (18%) of nurse practitioners practice in rural areas compared to physicians (9%) who are practicing in rural areas. While one in five US residents live in rural areas, only one in ten physicians practice in those areas (Bodenheimer and Pham, 2010).Monster Will physician assistants (PAs) also help to address this need?Jensen The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Nursing Research Network commissioned Kevin Stange, University of Michigan, and Deborah Sampson, Boston College, to plot the provider-to-primary care physician ratio for NPs and physician assistants by county, calculated as the population-weighted average for states with available data. Between 1995 and 2009, the number of NPs per primary care MD more than doubled, as did the number of physician assistants per primary care MD (RWJF, 2010.)These figures suggest that it i s possible to increase the supply of both NPs and PAs in a relatively short amount of time, helping to meet the increased demand for care.Monster How do educational costs compare with NPs and PAs?Jensen Last year, we surveyed all FNP programs and medical (DO/MD) preparation. We reported that the total NP program cost is less than two-thirds of the cost of one year of medical school. Our findings are consistent with the older information reported in the Institute of Medicine (IOM.)That means that the number of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) that can be trained for the cost of training 1 physician is between 3 and 14.Assessing the costs of education is a multidimensional problem, due primarily to the complexities of deriving the production cost to the institution. One study, sponsored by the Association of Academic Health Centers (Gonyea, 1998) attempted to compare the educational cost for various health professions. It concluded that for every 1 physician (4 years), 14 a dvanced nurse practitioners or 12 physician assistants could be produced (Starck, 2005).Monster How are nurse practitioners likely to impact the way health care is practiced in the future?Jensen In addition to providing excellent primary, acute and specialty care, NPs bring a unique perspective to health services in that they distributions-mix emphasis on both care and cure. NPs also focus on health promotion, disease prevention, and health education and counseling, guiding patients to make smarter health and lifestyle choices.By providing both high-quality care and health counseling, NPs can lower the cost of health care for patients. For example, patients with NPs as their primary care provider have fewer instances of emergency-room visits, shorter hospital stays and often have lower medication costs. This can be attributed to the fact that NPs partner with patients for their health and provide the necessary information so that they know when early intervention is needed. As rules and regulations governing NP practice change, allowing greater access to NP-delivered care and allowing NPs to practice to the full extent of their education and training, more and more people will receive the expert patient-centered care that NPs bring to those they treat. This is just one way that NPs will impact the way health care is practiced in the future.

How to Negotiate Your Way to a Golden Parachute

How to Negotiate Your Way to a Golden ParachuteHow to Negotiate Your Way to a Golden Parachute We all know that you can negotiate your salary - but can you also negotiate a bigger payout if your company decides to let you go? While an upgraded severance package is far from a aya thing, most experts agree that its always worth asking about.Everything is negotiable, says Labor & Employment Attorney Alex Granovsky of Granovsky & Sundaresh PLLC . Your employer is (probably) not offering you a severance package to be nice. While there is usually money involved, dont forget that your employer is getting something from you too. Your employer is paying you to shut up, go away, and never sue the company. If you understand what your former employers needs are, you can leverage your unique position. The trick, of course, is knowing how to do it the right way - you cant exactly march into your HR managers office and refuse to leave the building unless your terms are met. As with negotiating your salary, negotiating a severance package requires tact and strategy. If you really want to guarantee a comfortable financial cushion after being ousted from your job , follow these best practices. Before you enter severance package negotiations, its important to realize how much sway you actually have - which is largely dependent on the circumstances of your departure. For example, if the departing employee is leaving because of poor performance they may not have any leverage, but if the employee has a potential legal claim, such as a claim for workplace discrimination or any other font of wrongful termination, this may provide the employee with some leverage, says Lori Rassas , employment attorney and author of The Perpetual Paycheck 5 Secrets to Getting a Job, Keeping a Job, and Earning Income for Life in the Loyalty-Free Workplace . In these types of situations, an employer may be likely to offer an employee with a severance package in exchange for the sig ning of a release agreement, which means the employee would agree not to file a lawsuit against the company related to their departure in exchange for a financial payment or other valuable services.Other factors that affect your ability to negotiate include the companys history for providing severance, your value historically to the company and any meaningful relationships you may have established with key influencers and your level in the food chain, says Roy Cohen, career coach and author of The Wall Street Professionals Survival Guide . And if youre particularly good at what you do, your company might consider a better package if you agree not to open your own small business in the same field and locale, as one brief example Theres also the guilt factor, as many employers feel schwimmbad about letting folks go, especially those who have been with them for the long-term, says David Bakke, Writer/Contributor at Money Crashers . Once you have a good idea of what type of and ho w much leverage you have, you can use that to formulate your argument for why you deserve a great severance package and what the terms of it should be. Always have a reason or several for why you are requesting that the severance be modified. Just because you want more, or something different, is never enough Make sure you think through what you really want and deserve and what you are willing to give up, Cohen says.Just as in salary negotiations , it helps to have a specific range of what youd like to receive in mind. But dont just throw out a random number - if you do, you could either accidentally lowball yourself or, on the flipside, turn your employer off of the idea of negotiating altogether because of an unreasonably high request. So when determining a target range, make sure to do your research, departureing first with the employee handbook. Many companies have severance policies in their company handbooks which establish a formula that provides a certain number of weeks sa lary for each year of service completed by the impacted employee. For example, an employer may have a policy that provides employees two weeks notice of a layoff along with a severance payment in the amount of two weeks of pay for each year of completed service, Rassas says. If such a policy does exist and the employee has some leverage, they should view the policy as the floor for the negotiation and be sure to propose a financial payment that is in excess of what they might already be entitled to.Its also worth reviewing your offer letter to ersatzdarsteller check and see if it included a stipulation on severance (often the case for senior executives) or doing some online research to see what those in similar situations have managed to secure. Having a tough time coming up with anything at all? As a general rule of thumb, two to four weeks of severance per year of service is a good benchmark to go by, Bakke says, although this can depend on your level of seniority and income bra cket. As someone who sees about ten severance agreements every week, I can say that I generally see about one week per year for lower wage earners, two weeks per year for various managers and executives, and more generous packages for high-level executives, says Granovsky .Keep in mind, though, that the total number of weeks or months is usually capped depending on the companys generosity and its ability to actually pay. Cash-strapped companies, no matter how kind they may be, simply dont have the financial wherewithal to offer rich packages, Cohen cautions.Make no mistake If youre only thinking about your severance package in terms of dollars and cents, youre missing out.Think both immediate and longer term. This is a divorce and your goal is to maximize your take-out. Items could include More money, your bonus , the ability to exercise stock options or to receive deferred compensation, paid COBRA, access to your voicemail, payment for educational benefits if you are part way th rough a program, agreed upon references, your laptop, continued payment of a company auto lease. The list goes on, Cohen says. I always encourage my clients to be bold and to ask for whatever they can get. One tip Cohen has for maximizing your success is starting with the big requests first. If you start out with the easy stuff, like references which cost the company zero dollars, then it will feel like a huge burden by the time you get to a request for a larger payout. They will think that they have already bent over backwards to accommodate you when, in fact, you have just shortchanged yourself by avoiding the more challenging negotiation, he says. And if an employer offers you an item in your severance package thats not up your alley, dont just take it - you can use it as leverage for something you do want, Rassas says. For example, I worked with a departing employee who was negotiating a severance package from one job and who already had another job lined up. When the empl oyer offered him a financial payment along career placement assistance in the form of a career advisor, the employee declined the additional assistance, Rassas shares. A better strategy would have been to ask for the full (or even partial) monetary value of the additional assistance, suggesting that he would be more comfortable using the funds for the precise type of assistance that best suits his needs. While its important to advocate for yourself during severance package negotiations, that doesnt mean you have to go it alone. In particularly hairy or complex situations, reaching out to an expert may be your best bet. When you have a complex negotiation make sure to consult an expert, either an employment attorney or a career coach who has a lot of experience helping clients negotiate both severance and job offers, Cohen advises.Even if you arent dealing with a potential lawsuit on your hands, reaching out to an experienced professional can help you think strategically, explore wh ich types of benefits are available, and help you make the most persuasive case possible.Remember, if an employee negotiates a severance package with someone in their companys HR Department , it is likely that the representative has negotiated other severance packages and/or has some training about how to manage those types of issues. An employee will likely be at a disadvantage if s/he is negotiating a package for the first time, Rassas says.

Consider using a functional resume format. This style of resume highlights your skills and relevant experie nce while glossing over dates which can help emphasize your suitability for a given position. If youve spent time working for yourself, be sure to include a broad title of self-employment on your resume to account for your time outside of corporate America. Most employers will understand and even appreciate the decision of self-employment. Working on your own brings a unique set of job skills including independence, initiative, and all-important drive. Opportunistic applicants can use a period of self-employment as a positive and spin the career gap into a strength to help land a new 9-5.As a final note for explanation of any job gap, whatever you do, avoid lying or being less than forthright about your time away from the career force. An explanation up front will go much further than trying to backtrack when caught in a little white lie. Own the reason for your career gap and move on to your relevant experience and the reasons youre the best candidate for the position.Plan AheadIf w eve said it once weve said it a million times. Before applying for a position or heading into the interview room, be sure to do your basic due diligence on the prospective employer. A quick perusal of the company website or a Google search for the employer name can provide a wealth of valuable information to help carefully craft your job gap response. Does the company focus on family values and a commitment to work/life balance? Your time off to raise your family or help out your ailing elderly relative will be completely understandable. While in many cases you may want to play coy with how much information you offer up if it looks like the employer would be open to your specific scenario, feel free to share in either your resume or in the interview room.Job Hunting CostsHaving an extended absence from the job market will often mean a bit of a larger investment in your initial search. From travel to professional fees to even relocation expenses, these extra expenses can add up quick , especially when you dont have an ongoing gig lined up. Keep in mind that many of these expenses can be deductible from your income come tax season. Track all expenses and keep receipts in a central location where youll be able to consult, document and deduct if you qualify down the line.Dealing with Money ProblemsBeing without a job isnt most peoples preferred state. Rent, food, entertainment and those pesky student loans can all wrack up big bills fast. Whatever you do, avoid taking out additional lines of credit if youre already strapped. Extra debt not only impacts your credit score, it can exponentially up the pressure to find a job, any job, which can seriously hinder efforts to find a great professional fit for yourself and career happiness.Stay PositiveWhile it may seem a bit simplistic and obvious, it still needs to be said that the single best thing you can do to support yourself during an extended job gap is to stay positive. You likely had great reasons for exiting the workforce to begin. Focus on these rather than berating yourself in hindsight and keep on plugging away at your attempts to find a new, better position. Develop a routine and submit resumes and applications regularly to help feel accomplished and on task. Before you know it youll find yourself back in the interview room and back up in the saddle, landing a position that will help make your job gap a distant and educational memory.

The Perfect Recruiting Email

The Perfect Recruiting Email The Perfect Recruiting Email Not everyone is receptive to random emails from strangers about open job opportunities (you may even hope they arent too interested). Some professionals in hot fields may just get a high volume of such solicitations and others are often just too busy to even read through a long email from a recruiter. So how do you quickly get the candidates interest and response? What makes for the perfect recruiting email? Here are some quick tips for writing great emails that attract candidate attentionCatchy Subject Line A lot has been written about commercial email subject lines, but there is a lot less written about the semi-personal world of job recruiting emails. Some of the same rules apply. Make your subject line instantly connect with the individual personalize and localize your message. For instance, you may get less response from New job near NYC than Mike, quick notenzeichen about a job in Bronxville. Make your subject line spe cific and entirely crafted to the individual. Reference locations exactly near them, exact skills or projects from their profile, or someone in particular that gave you their name.Guess their Motivation If youre a recruiting pro, there is a good chance that you can guess a lot about a person just from their resume or social media profile. Are they climbing the corporate ladder and emphasize job titles on their resume? Ill bet they would be motivated by including verbiage about the seniority and management focus of that open position you have. Do they work at an employer and team that you know works their employees to death with long hours? Emphasize the flexibility of your position or if they would work for a friendly management team, write that. Try to figure out what would make the candidate want your job chances are its simple logistics like location, money, company environment, or management team.Portray your Competence People get emailed all the time from recruiters that spend one second looking at their resume. They get emailed for the wrong jobs and even for positions that are in the wrong location. Make sure that you take special care to determine exactly what the candidate does, and only email them if you have a good match. Your communications should portray a competent recruiter that really took the time to understand their experience. Including simple, personal notes like I saw you worked with SAP ABAP back at IBM and was wondering if you would like to again do more than entice the candidate they demonstrate your recruiting abilities and make the candidate comfortable.Highlight Connections Do you have any personal or professional connection with the candidate you are trying to recruit? Have you recruited for one of the companies for which the candidate worked? Did you get their name from a reference? Did you have a friend at their college? Do you know some hiring managers from their current employer? Anything personal helps. Thoughtful notes like B TW, I binnensee you studied math at Tufts, I spent a summer there myself and know how hard you must have worked go a long way with people. Optimally, a recruiting email should be less like a commercial email and more like a note from a friend about a great job they heard about.Recruiters, have any secret email tips that you dont want to keep secret? Whats worked well for you? Wed love to hear in the comments.

John Staehlin, Hoover Medal

John Staehlin, Hoover Medal John Staehlin, Hoover Medal John Staehlin, 2017 Hoover Medal The Hoover Medal commemorates civic and humanitarian achievements of engineers who have advanced the well-being of humankind. It is administered by a board representing five engineering organizations: ASME; the American Society of Civil Engineers; the American Institute of Chemical Engineers; the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers; and IEEE. John Staehlin, P.E., president emeritus of Volunteers for Medical Engineering (now V-LINC) in Baltimore, Md., is honored for founding a not-for-profit volunteer organization to create special-purpose assistive devices that enable physically-disabled persons to achieve greater independence and an improved quality of life. Mr. Staehlin has been an inventor throughout his long engineering career. He has over 400 invention disclosures and 33 patents. His early inventions were primarily for radar systems for the defense industry, including the F-16, AWACS (the airborne warning and control system) and the B-1B. In 1982 Mr. Staehlin founded Volunteers for Medical Engineering (VME) in Baltimore. He and his co-workers at Westinghouse and Northrop Grumman developed antenna systems by day and assistive devices in the evenings and on weekends. VME grew and merged with Learning Independence Through Computers (LINC) in 2010 to form V-LINC. Mr. Staehlin has inspired thousands of engineers, high school and college students, and friends, to create life-changing, customized devices to help people with disabilities. He remains active with V-LINC and within his retirement community, chairing regular meetings of local volunteers and designing solutions to obstacles faced by disabled children and fellow seniors. Mr. Staehlin earned his bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from Johns Hopkins University and his masters degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland.
